On the Validity of the Classical Apsidal Motion Formula for Tidal Distortion

چکیده
We check the validity of the widely used classical apsidal motion formula as a function of orbital parameters, stellar structure, and stellar rotation rate by comparing dynamical calculations of the periastron advance with the static tidal formula. We nd that the classical formula gives very accurate results when the periods of the low order quadrupole g, f and p modes are smaller than the periastron passage time by a factor of about 7 or more. However, when this condition is not satissed, the diierence between the classical formula and the exact result can be quite large, and even periastron recession can result. The largest diierence arises when one of the low order modes of the star is nearly resonant with an integer multiple of the orbital frequency minus twice the rotation rate of the star. The resonance of higher order g-modes (number of radial nodes > 4) with the orbit is very unlikely to cause signiicant deviation from the classical result because of their weak coupling to the tidal force and thus their small contribution to the apsidal motion. Resonances involving rotational modes of the star are also unlikely to make much contribution to the apsidal motion because of their small overlap with the tidal force, even though they have periods comparable to the periastron passage time. We apply our work to two famous binary systems (AS Cam and DI Her) which show abnormally small apsidal motion, and conclude that dynamical eeects are unimportant for these systems, i.e. the static tide assumption is an excellent approximation.

The influence of dynamic tides on the apsidal-motion rate in close binaries with an evolved main-sequence star
The validity of the classical formula for the rate of secular apsidal motion in close binaries is investigated for a sequence of models of a 5M⊙ star ranging from the last stages of the C 12 → N reaction to the phase where hydrogen is exhausted in the core. For binaries with short orbital periods, the apsidal-motion rates predicted by the classical formula deviate from the rates determined with...
متن کاملThe effect of stellar compressibility and non-resonant dynamic tides on the apsidal-motion rate in close binaries
The paper is devoted to the analysis of the systematic deviations between the classical formula for the rate of secular apsidal motion in close binaries and the formula established within the framework of the theory of dynamic tides. The basic behaviour is found to be governed by the dependency of the forcing frequencies on the orbital period and the rotational angular velocity, irrespective of...
متن کاملInternal Structure and Apsidal Motions of Polytropic Stars in Close Binaries
We consider a synchronized, circular-orbit binary consisting of a polytrope with index n and a point-mass object, and use a self-consistent field method to construct the equilibrium structure of the polytrope under rotational and tidal perturbations. Our self-consistent field method is distinct from others in that the equilibrium orbital angular velocity is calculated automatically rather than ...
متن کاملResonant dynamic tides and apsidal motion in close binaries
The resonance of a dynamic tide with a free oscillation mode in a component of a close binary system of stars is treated by means of a two-time variable expansion procedure. The treatment is developed with respect to a frame of reference corotating with the star. Both the free oscillation mode and the dynamic tide are considered as linear, isentropic perturbations of a spherically symmetric sta...
متن کاملRetrograde Spin-Orbit coupling Effects on the apsidal motion of Eclipsing Binary Star Systems: the case of V541Cygni
It is usually known that the line of apsides of eclipsing binary star systems precesses due to general relativistic effects and classical (Newtonian) tidal and rotational deformations of the stars, whose rotation axes are assumed normal to the orbital plane. For almost all binaries, the expected theoretical and observed apsidal motion rates are in agreement. However, some systems –V541 Cygni, V...
